Ghost Hospital In Ellis Island. Now Open! October 08 2014

The dilapidated hospital on Ellis Island has been shuttered since 1954. But now it's opening to the public. The occasion? An art exhibition.  Artist JR has pasted up historic life size photographs around the empty buildings, as part of his "Unframed" project, which extends off the island. The "intent is to evoke a sense of time and place and give context to the human lives that were touched by their time at Ellis Island."

Guided 90-minute tours will take you to select areas of the 750-bed Ellis Island Hospital. Visit the Laundry Building, with much of its original equipment still in place, where over 3000 pieces of laundry were washed and sanitized daily, infectious and contagious disease wards, kitchen, staff housing, autopsy room and more.
